Kuwait in Deep Sorrow: Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Died at 86

The sudden passing of Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has left Kuwait in mourning.His influence as a leader continued long after he left office. Born in June 1937, Sheikh Nawaf dedicated his life to serving his country and its people.

With almost fifty years of active involvement in Kuwaiti politics, Sheikh Nawaf ascended to the position of Emir upon the death of his brother Sheikh Sabah in September 2020.His dedication to maintaining stability, clever diplomatic techniques, and thorough knowledge of both local and foreign events defined his leadership.

Three years after taking office in the oil-rich ally of the United States, Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah passed suddenly on Saturday at the age of 86, according to the Royal Court. His death’s cause was not immediately known. At the end of the previous month, the Emir was taken to the hospital due to an urgent health condition, as reported by the state news agency. 

 Sheikh Nawaf was succeeded by Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, an 83-year-old who had been Kuwait’s de facto ruler since 2021 when the sick Emir assigned most of his responsibilities to him. Kuwait ordered a three-day shutdown of all government offices and declared 40 days of mourning. Leaders from throughout the world offered homage to Sheikh Nawaf and condolences.

In recent months, an agreement between the administration and the elected parliament had emerged, notwithstanding the high political difficulties that had existed during his tenure.
